Hoboken is one square mile. From Hoboken Terminal you can reach Midtown Manhattan, the Financial District, Times Square or Broadway in 20 minutes or less, by PATH, ferry, or NJ Transit rail.

Stevens Institute of Technology was founded on February 15, 1870, and its campus has occupied Castle Point — the high ground on the Hoboken shoreline — ever since. The bluff looks out over the Hudson River and the length of the New York City skyline.

Washington Street runs the length of the town below the campus, lined with restaurants, bars and shops. The campus gates open on 9th Street.

Getting here from Manhattan

Four separate services cross the Hudson into Hoboken. Every one of them lands at or near Hoboken Terminal, at the south end of town.

PATH: Trains run from Hoboken Terminal to the World Trade Center, and up Sixth Avenue to Christopher Street, 9th Street, 14th Street, 23rd Street and 33rd Street. From the terminal, walk uptown on Washington Street to 6th Street and turn east for the campus.
Ferry: NY Waterway sails from the Hoboken/NJ Transit Terminal landing to Brookfield Place seven days a week, and to Midtown/W. 39th Street and Pier 11/Wall Street on weekdays. The Hoboken 14th Street landing also runs to Midtown/W. 39th Street.
NJ Transit: Commuter rail lines terminate at Hoboken Terminal. Buses run the length of Washington Street — exit at 8th Street for the main campus.
Light rail: The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stops at Hoboken Terminal and at 9th Street–Congress Street, at the top of the bluff.
On the ground: Citi Bike operates throughout Hoboken and Jersey City. The free Hoboken Hop shuttle passes the campus.

From the airports

Newark Liberty is the closest airport to Hoboken. JFK and LaGuardia are both on the far side of New York City.

Newark (EWR): AirTrain Newark connects every terminal to Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, and the AirTrain fee is already included in an NJ Transit ticket bought to or from the airport. Take NJ Transit to Newark Penn Station, then PATH toward Hoboken, changing at Journal Square or Grove Street. Driving, it is the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 14C and the Holland Tunnel approach.
JFK: AirTrain JFK reaches Jamaica Station from the central terminal area in 10 to 15 minutes. From Jamaica, a westbound Long Island Rail Road train runs to Penn Station in about 20 minutes; the 33rd Street PATH station is a short walk from there, and runs to Hoboken.
LaGuardia (LGA): No rail line reaches the LaGuardia terminals. Plan on a car.

Driving and parking

Take the train if you can. Stevens requires a permit for every visitor vehicle on campus, spaces are not guaranteed, and the university describes parking off campus as extremely limited.

Lincoln Tunnel: Follow the signs to Hoboken out of the tunnel, turn left at 14th Street, right onto Washington Street, then left on 9th Street and through the campus gates.
Holland Tunnel: Take the first right after the tunnel onto Luis Munoz Marin Boulevard, which becomes Henderson Street. Turn left onto Washington Street at the last light on Observer Highway, then right on 9th Street and through the gates.
From the south: The New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 14C, then the Holland Tunnel approach above. This is also the driving route from Newark Liberty.
On-campus parking: Permits are arranged in advance through your host and must sit on the dashboard. Spaces are first come, first served and are not guaranteed. There is no overnight parking for visitors.
Public garages: Hoboken municipal Garage B at 28 2nd Street, Garage D at 215 Hudson Street and Garage G at 315 Hudson Street. Privately run: the River Street Garage at 333 River Street and the Independence Garage at 2 12th Street.

Where to stay

Hoboken is a square mile, so rooms in town are limited — book early. Weehawken to the north and Jersey City to the south sit on the same waterfront and the same transit lines.

Hoboken: W Hoboken, 225 River Street, on the waterfront at the south end of town, near Hoboken Terminal.
Weehawken: Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel, 500 Harbor Boulevard, on the Hudson immediately north of Hoboken. NY Waterway serves a Lincoln Harbor landing.
Jersey City: Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson, 2 Exchange Place, next to the Exchange Place PATH station.
